Awaiting decisionUnited States v. Michel (D.C. Circuit appeal)
Will Pras Michel's 1MDB foreign-influence convictions survive his appeal?
Where the case stands
Fully tried and sentenced. Post-trial Rule 29/33 motions (including an ineffective-assistance claim over trial counsel's use of a generative-AI program for the closing argument) were denied in the district court. Appeal pending in the D.C. Circuit; the court denied Michel bail pending appeal. No oral-argument date publicly reported as of Oct. 12, 2026.
Background
Prakazrel "Pras" Michel, founding member of the Fugees, was convicted in April 2023 of funneling money from Malaysian financier Jho Low into U.S. politics and of back-channel foreign-influence efforts spanning the Obama and Trump administrations, all tied to the 1MDB scandal.
Charges
- Convicted April 2023 on all 10 counts, including conspiracy to defraud the United States, acting as an unregistered agent of a foreign principal, campaign-finance violations and witness tampering
- Sentenced to 14 years in federal prison; appeal filed December 2025
The arguments
Prosecution/State: Michel took tens of millions from Jho Low to launder foreign money into the 2012 U.S. election, then lobbied the Trump administration to drop the 1MDB investigation and to return Chinese dissident Guo Wengui, and tampered with witnesses.
Defense: New counsel argues Michel's trial was fundamentally unfair — headlined by trial counsel's reliance on an experimental generative-AI tool for the closing argument — and challenges the sufficiency and legal theories underlying the foreign-agent and campaign-finance counts.
The record
- Celebrity and political testimony. Trial testimony included Leonardo DiCaprio and senior political figures describing Low's money and Michel's influence efforts.
- Money-flow records. Documentary evidence tracing Low's transfers through Michel to straw donors and influence campaigns.
- Public post-trial record. Rule 29/33 litigation, including the AI-closing-argument ineffective-assistance claim, publicly available via CourtListener/RECAP.
The line-setting read at the time this market opened
The D.C. Circuit denied bail pending appeal — a signal it did not see a substantial question likely to result in reversal. Most federal convictions are affirmed on direct appeal. Opening guilty-side (affirm) read: ~0.80.
Awaiting decision — D.C. Circuit merits briefing/argument and the panel's decision; oral-argument audio will be posted by the court when argued. The ruling is posted here, and on the board, the moment it's confirmed by two or more independent news organizations.
