Court
U.S. District Court, N.D. Illinois, Chicago (Hon. Sharon Johnson Coleman)
Division
Trial Court

Where the case stands

Awaiting sentencing. Sentencing has been continued repeatedly (reportedly eight times) while DOJ evaluates his cooperation; it was deliberately sequenced after Ismael 'El Mayo' Zambada's January 2026 life sentence in Brooklyn.

Background

Ovidio 'El Ratón' Guzmán López, son of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán and a leader of the Chapitos faction of the Sinaloa cartel. Extradited from Mexico in September 2023; pleaded guilty in Chicago on July 11, 2025 — the first Guzmán family member to plead guilty in a U.S. court.

Charges

The arguments

Prosecution/State: Guzmán López helped run the Chapitos' drug empire and its fentanyl pipeline into the United States, conduct warranting the gravest sentence available under the CCE and conspiracy statutes.

Defense: His guilty plea and extensive cooperation against other cartel figures warrant a substantial reduction below a life term.

The record

The line-setting read at the time this market opened

A cooperation plea with the government weighing a reduction motion makes a life sentence the less likely branch; the CCE counts nonetheless expose him to life, and the judge is not bound by any recommendation.

Awaiting decision — The April 14, 2027 hearing before Judge Coleman, at which the government is expected to address cooperation and sentencing posture; sentence may be imposed then or a final date set. The ruling is posted here, and on the board, the moment it's confirmed by two or more independent news organizations.
