United States v. Oseguera-González (D.C. Circuit appeal)

Will the D.C. Circuit uphold 'El Menchito's' conviction and life-plus-30 sentence in full?

Court
U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, No. 25-3032
Division
Appeals & Post-Conviction

Where the case stands

Direct appeal of the convictions and the life-plus-30 sentence, argued before a D.C. Circuit panel on September 15, 2026; opinion pending.

Background

Rubén 'El Menchito' Oseguera-González, U.S.-born son of CJNG leader Nemesio 'El Mencho' Oseguera Cervantes and the cartel's former second-in-command. Extradited in 2020; convicted by a D.D.C. jury in September 2024; sentenced March 7, 2025 to life plus 30 years; held at ADX Florence.

Charges

The arguments

Prosecution/State: Cooperator testimony and trial evidence showed he ordered killings and ran CJNG drug and weapons operations as its number two.

Defense: Attacks on cooperating witnesses' credibility, evidentiary rulings, and his juvenile status during part of the charged conspiracy.

The record

The line-setting read at the time this market opened

Most federal direct appeals end in affirmance, and the D.C. Circuit affirmed the parallel evidentiary record at trial; the juvenile-status argument is the most serious relief theory. No opinion appears on the court's September (19 opinions) or October (through Oct 2) release lists.

Awaiting decision — The panel's opinion — affirm in full, or vacate/remand any count or the sentence. The ruling is posted here, and on the board, the moment it's confirmed by two or more independent news organizations.
