Awaiting decisionMinnesota v. Boelter
Will Vance Boelter be convicted of first-degree murder at his state trial?
Where the case stands
State trial remains set for May 10, 2027; Judge Hoyos lifted the temporary gag order in the state case on Oct 8, 2026.
Background
On June 14, 2025, Boelter — disguised as a police officer — shot and killed former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and shot and wounded Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. He pleaded guilty to six federal counts (including stalking resulting in death and murder through use of a firearm) and on July 23, 2026 was sentenced by Judge John R. Tunheim to two consecutive life terms plus 40 years. Minnesota is now trying him on state murder charges.
Charges
- Two counts of first-degree premeditated murder (LWOP on conviction)
- Attempted murder
- Aggravated animal cruelty (shooting the Hortmans' dog)
- Impersonating a police officer
The arguments
Prosecution/State: A premeditated political assassination: Boelter extensively researched his targets, used disguises, firearms and law-enforcement-style equipment to reach the victims' homes, killed the Hortmans and shot the Hoffmans
Defense: Boelter has floated 'justifiable taking of life' and citizen's-arrest statutory defenses; prosecutors have asked the court to bar them as devoid of factual support
The record
- Federal guilty plea. Boelter admitted the shootings when he pleaded guilty to six federal counts, including stalking resulting in the deaths of Melissa and Mark Hortman (DOJ).
- Disguise and equipment. Per DOJ, he used disguises, firearms, and law-enforcement-style gear, and researched his intended targets before the attacks.
- Public federal docket. The D. Minn. criminal docket (0:25-cr-00272) with the complaint, plea and sentencing filings is public via RECAP/CourtListener.
The line-setting read at the time this market opened
Boelter already admitted the killings under oath in his federal plea and is serving consecutive life terms; barring the near-impossible success of the statutory defenses prosecutors call baseless, a first-degree murder conviction (or plea) is heavily favored.
Awaiting decision — Jury verdict at the May 10, 2027 trial — or a pre-trial guilty plea resolving the murder counts. The ruling is posted here, and on the board, the moment it's confirmed by two or more independent news organizations.
